I am a PhD student in the philosophy department at the University of Sheffield. (Funded by a University Studentship and the Philosophy Department.) My interests center around epistemology. In particular, I am interested in the epistemology of memory and its relation to the internalism/externalism debate. My PhD focuses on a series of problems involving memory that the internalist faces (such problems have been forcefully raised by Goldman among others). I argue that internalism can answer these problems, and indeed makes the best epistemology of memory. In the process, I make use of current work in metacognition, and challenge some (empirical) claims made by Goldman and Williamson. I am also interested in pragmatic encroachment and in the consequences of denying closure, and just about any area of epistemology. I am lucky enough to be supervised by David Owens and Chris Hookway. I also have a serious interest in the philosophy of mathematics and set theory, as well as interests in the philosophies of mind, psychology, and science. Before coming to Sheffield I did an MPhil at King's College London. In the spring of 2009 I will be a visiting Research Associate at UC Irvine.
When not in the UK, I can be found in Berlin, which is where my partner, Nora Markard, lives. She is a PhD student and mitarbeiterin at Humboldt Universitaet Berlin working at the intersection of law, politcal science, and gender studies. Check out one of her publications here. Berlin is a great place to live. I also tried to learn German, aber ich kann Kant oder Frege nicht auf Deutsch lesen. Anyway, you should come and visit it at least once.
